“Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.” - Psalm 55:22
David was overwhelmed with the weight of external pressures and internal anguish inside the cage of life. Burden takedowns come in a variety of emotional, spiritual, and physical forms, but they all feel heavy and cause weariness. Every one of us can identify with David’s desire for God to keep him from tapping out!
Some of the loads we are punched and kicked by are not part of God’s plan for us. We continue to recieve painful leg kicks of guilt that lingers even after confession of sin and taste the sharp elbows of worry about the future. Then we top it off by standing in the center of the cage with our hands down while the enemy hits us with punches of bitterness and unforgiveness because the good fight has not been fair. These burden attacks are not from the Lord, and He will not help you defend what He has trained you to duck!
The burdens of being an Anointed Fighter for Christ, however, are entrusted to us by God. As a champion in his eternal kingdom, he gives us responsibilities which can weigh us down, and He sometimes allows relational difficulties that kick at our hearts. Persistent problems and trials, like hard painful leg kicks, drain our vitality and threaten to overwhelm us during the championship rounds of the good fight.
Every punch, kick, elbow or takedown inside the cage of life is lovingly sifted through the Lord’s fingers before reaching us. From His perspective, those things which are too powerful for us are opportunities for dependence upon Him. God never intends for any of us to carry a burden without Him. He says to give it to Him (v. 22) and promises to sustain us.
Casting your cares upon God means releasing them fully into His control. You will no longer be free to manage and manipulate the situation toward your desired outcome, but the championship freedom Christ offers will release you from the burden’s oppressive weight. He’ll sustain you with His peace as you trust Him.
Remember, it is called a fight for a reason but we fight from victory not for victory!
